He is best known for his screenplays of such classics as "Sabrina" (1953), "The King and I" (1955), "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), "North by Northwest" (1959), "West Side Story" (1961), "The Sound of Music" (1963), "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), "Hello, Dolly" (1968) and "Family Plot" (1976). Served as president of the Writers Guild of America from 1983-85.
